Cosmo Connections, May 1996
Two Semesters at The Cosmopolitan Club
by Petra Oberhofer
After my arrival in Champaign-Urbana last August, I had to undertake the
strenuous task of looking for a place to stay. And believe me, it was no easy
task considering that for somebody coming from Germany it was extremely hot
and humid and a lot of walking needed to be done. After one week of desperate
searching, I chanced to walk by the Cosmopolitan Club and the sign "Room
Available" caught my eye. I immediately fell in love with the place and I have
not revised my first impression. It was the ideal place because it provides
just the right balance between common life and privacy. Moreover, I think that
there are not many other places where you can live with people from all over
the world. It is a great experience to live with more than ten cultures under
one roof. The house's hot spot is, as you can imagine, the kitchen where
everybody meets in order to prepare his or her more or less sophisticated
dinner. Cosmo was the oasis where I could relax after all the hustle and
bustle at school.
I should not forget to mention the coffee hours and Sunday dinners at which
you can make more friends in one evening than in one semester in class. I want
to thank you all for being so friendly and easy to talk to. Last but not
least, I want to thank Andrea, the good fairy of Cosmo, for having great
advice in every situation and for offering a helping hand whenever needed.
