French Idiocy and Bad Movies

by Pierre Deloulme

Finding a subject to write about for the Cosmo newsletter is not an easy thing for a newcomer to the house like me. Hopefully for me (or not) it will be my only article in this paper. So today we will talk about…good question? First, I thought I should write about all the reasons that make France the greatest nation in the world but after some reflection on this topic I realized it would be far easier to show that French people are idiots. (I am French. Trust me, I know the subject).

Next, I thought I should write an article about one of my passions. My first passion, World War II, is not the most interesting and appropriate topic for a residents’ newsletter so I will talk about my second passion, namely cinema. Let’s talk about cinema and in particular two movies you must…avoid watching in the theaters: Dragonball Evolution and 17 Again.

Dragonball Evolution is an adaptation of the very famous Manga Dragonball with Emmy Rossum (Mystic River, Poseidon, The Day After Tomorrow, etc.) and Justin Chatwin (War of the World) in the main roles. The story is “no story”; it is just a video with some characters that are very famous. The actors are very, very bad… In my opinion, there is no positive aspect of the movie that I can talk about.

The other movie, 17 Again, can be renamed High School Musical 4 (without the music, of course) or 13 Going 30, but in the opposite direction. The movie tells the story of a man (Matthew Perry, Chandler of Friends) who has a horrible life (his job is useless, his wife wants a divorce, and his children think he is an idiot). One day, he wakes up as a teenager (this role is played by the actor Zac Efron, the main character of High School Musical) and he decides to go back to high school. The problem with this film is that you know how it is going to end even before the first 10 minutes of the movie, and the story is not interesting. But if you like High School Musical (which was not my case), maybe you will 17 Again too.

These brief reviews are my personal point of view, so you do not have to agree. To end the article on a fun note, let me ask a question about cinema: Who plays the double of Queen Amidala in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace? (Send me your answer by e-mail.)
