“One Night, One Purpose”:
The Katiali Benefit Dinner

by Rachel Storm

After hearing about the Cosmopolitan Club’s project to rebuild and renovate a school in the village of Katiali in the Ivory Coast, I desired to aid in the cause. Knowing full and well that I could not join Felix and Moussa in their journey, I desired to help raise money for the project itself. At first, I attempted to raise money by means of soliciting, but I knew I could do more.

It was then that I decided to throw a dinner party event at Florida Avenue Residence Hall, for which I would charge an entrance donation that would help fund the charity. Not only was the dinner able to raise nearly four hundred dollars, but attendees were soon informed about the humanitarian cause and the Cosmo Club itself.

Felix presented the project in the loveliest of ways, providing a presentation that featured information and pictures of the school and children, humanizing the cause greatly. Such a visual is often necessary when raising money for charity. The fun didn’t end there however, as all of you who attended know. Live bands filled the room with vibrant music. Santa, a local folk-funk fusion band urged guests out of their seats and onto the dance floor. A Classical Indian dance mesmerized audiences while the rhythmic sounds of Turkish Music Ensemble left us begging for more.

The event was more than a success and I am happy to have helped out. James Adams once said, “the greatest gift in life is to send it on something that outlasts it” and all those who helped out or attended the benefit have done just that.
