You can’t help noticing what people eat at the Cosmo House, because that’s where you spend most of your socializing time. Ajay usually eats “house fast food” for lunch, typically nothing more than Panera bread and occasionally Papa Del’s Pizza. He drinks a lot of chocolate milk after work, and always cooks a gourmet Indian dinner very late at night. Felix doesn’t have too much time to cook because of schoolwork. He prefers to eat outdoors whenever whether permits. Moussa likes rice. He usually cooks chicken or beef to go with the rice. You can smell his mouth-watering chicken even in the laundry room. Frederik is the guru of vegetable cooking. Six out of ten times you see him cooking in the kitchen, he is cutting vegetables. Another three out of ten times, you will see him trying very hard to cover pieces of bread with different kinds of cheese. When he is not cutting vegetables or cheese, Frederik tries to mimic dishes from other parts of the world. Ana is the queen of frozen pizza. She also enjoys the combination of bread, cheese, and tomato. Her eating schedule is usually three hours behind everyone else’s. Florin is the champion of raw vegetables. He consumes a lot of raw carrots, radishes, and cabbages, along with orange juice and a big variety of instant microwave food. Ingmar is the Burger King®; occasionally he diversifies to the McDonald’s on Kirby. Kate is usually too lazy to cook. But when she does cook, it is guaranteed to be a piece of beautifully, creatively crafted art. She sometimes worries about the outcome of her crafting, but 95 percent of the time it turns out to be delicious. Gabi’s eating style is very similar to Ana’s. To be different, he heats up milk with his small red pot. Ida doesn’t cook at the Cosmo House often. Once she made her famous Czech-Thai Curry for lunch, and consequently, she was invited to cook it again for the House’s Sunday Dinner. Young Jae opens the freezer in the basement almost every time before she cooks. While her Lean Cuisine is in the microwave, she eats a bowl of ice-cream for the appetizer. Sharyl usually waits until she is starving before she comes down to the kitchen. She then fixes herself with the best salad in the house. Sayuri cannot live without rice, though we sometimes doubt if she also cannot live without her Miso soup, fried eggs, Japanese curry, chicken breast, and Polish sausages. Andrea occasionally cooks at the house too, but only for us. Her philosophy is to cook in the most economic and efficient manner. According to his housemates, Zhong-Ning reheats his left-over food in the form of soups way too often. He enjoys making the Sunday Dinners for all his friends. And finally, the goddess of culinary arts, the gold medalist of the eating competition, the lifetime lover of chocolate pudding and strawberry smoothies, the soloist of 16 different kinds of cakes, 8 different kinds of warm dishes, as well as the unforgettable apple strudel and vanilla dumpling for more than 200 people, is of course, Daniela. She is sometimes also referred to as the “Princess of Bavaria”. We remember people by their little details. Remembering what our housemates eat helps us remember their personalities, comments, and smiles.
