Lebanese Cultural Club

by Saad Khairallah

The Lebanese Cultural Club, or LCC, is a two-year-old organization. In fact, our first public activity was a coffee hour at the Cosmopolitan Club. In LCC we feel it is important to represent our rich culture and convey a correct image of our beloved country.

Thanks to the dynamism and friendliness of LCC members, we were able to put together two of the most successful coffee hours for the spring of 2004 and 2005, a fact acknowledged by the head of Cosmo club, Mrs. Andrea Shields, and several people and friends living at Cosmo House.

Lebanon is a diverse country, and you can see that through its members. Our culture is a mix between the liberal West and more conservative Eastern world. This is a consequence of Lebanon`s geographical location in the Middle East on the Mediterranean Sea. It is not rare for a Lebanese citizen to speak three languages: Arabic (official), French, and English.

The main qualities of the Lebanese culture consist of solid family values, a sense of hospitality, a strong emphasis on higher education, and an appreciation of all forms of art.

We are a joyous people, who adore nature, eating good food, dancing, and partying. Please come meet our friendly members in the coming coffee hours, taste our food, see our gorgeous mountains and beaches, hear our music, and dance with us.

Saad Khairallah, from Lebanon, is a Ph.D. candidate in Physics. A member of the Lebanese Cultural Club (LCC) at UIUC, Saad helps organize events across campus promoting the Lebanese cultural heritage. LCC organized one of the most successful coffee hours at Cosmo this semester.
