An Inspiration to Us All

by Julio Urbina and Kazumi Ohira

Judith Gordon has been living practitioner of the club's philosophy and motto: "Above all nations is humanity." Many people have already recognized her numerable contributions to the club. As affirmed in the Cosmo Connections article, Profile: Judith Gordon, Dr. Gordon "believes that there is so much to learn and share that life will never be boring. For her, people are wonderful and fascinating, and learning about others and teaching and sharing brings joy."

She has continuously focused her life in this direction. For example, in 1997 she joined the U of I as the Director of the program called English for Specific Purposes in the Division of English as an International Language. For five years she worked extremely hard to develop a variety of programs and materials to promote better understanding between American employers and employees who were non-native speakers of English at their workplaces.

Unfortunately, the university had to close the program due to its budget cut. But perhaps, this door was closed because destiny wanted her extraordinary skills as a teacher in another place. She now works in the Champaign Middle School helping Hispanic children to assimilate successfully into the American school system.

Dr. Gordon has made a great impact on the lives of many people, including the authors of this article. She is a continuous source of inspiration for all of us.
