Alumni Connections

by Carl Wagner

In November I received a telephone call from the UIUC alumni office asking me if I would mind if they gave my e-mail address to one Aryamen Kumarappa Shalizi. They also sent me a copy of their reply to him which included his e-mail address.

I immediately wrote him asking if he had come across my name from my article about Cosmo in 1941 which you had printed and apparently placed online. Aryamen was trying to find out more about his grandfather's past and instituted a random search of the Internet for Web pages mentioning the name Shalizi; a copy of Cosmo Connections came up.

He writes, "The piece especially caught my attention because about a week before I read it I was visiting my family in DC and my grandfather told me the same story about Pearl Harbor that you mentioned in your article!" He added, "In any case I would love to know more about my grandfather's days at UIUC, since he speaks of them so fondly. Especially how he got the name "Charley." He also stated that he thought that his grandfather would love to hear from me and gave me his grandfather's address and phone number. I called "Charley" and his grandson was absolutely right; we had a wonderful chat and look forward to many more. We had not heard from one another for 60 years! Cosmo strikes again!
