Ivan Feitl Garners the John Price Award

by Laura Fernandez

Ivan Feitl
At this year's International Dinner on April 1st, Ivan Feitl was awarded the John W. Price Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership in promoting international awareness and understanding in the Champaign-Urbana community. John W. Price served as International Programs Director of the University YMCA at the University of Illinois from 1950-1968. Under his leadership, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, and community members gained a special appreciation for the international richness of this community and the special gifts which people of many cultures bring to this campus. Through his programs, students now spread around the globe took on a special commitment to international peace and understanding. John W. Price gave active leadership to the Cosmopolitan Club and to the Office of International Student Affairs where he served as staff member following his retirement from the YMCA.

As Ivan Feitl wrote in his essay A Bag Of Potatoes, "In the Cosmopolitan Club I make friends with people from all around the globe. It is a very special feeling when you present your country just by being yourself." In the past couple of years, Ivan has done much more than making friends on this campus, he has become deeply involved with Cosmopolitan Club activities and programs, truly making an impact in the international community of the University.

He has not only done a great job in presenting his country by co-hosting different events that highlighted the Croatian culture, but he is extremely interested in other cultures as well. As the manager of the Cosmopolitan Club house, he is dedicated to such activities as the regular coffee hours and dinners that expose different countries and promote cultural understanding. Ivan helped in the creation of a film series, co-sponsored by the Study Abroad Office and the Cosmopolitan Club. In addition, he was the co-emcee in the University YMCA International Dinner in Spring 2000.

Ivan is one of the most hard-working people that I have ever met, and it is through his hard work and commitment to international understanding and his extensive involvement in cultural activities that he is doing exactly what John W. Price would tell students to do. Moreover, Ivan has a personality and quiet but vivacious vitality that attracts people to him and reflect his leadership abilities. He can work easily with others and is a constructive member of any team effort. In his position as the manager of the Cosmopolitan Club house, one of his best attributes is his ability to develop close friendships with the residents while at the same time acting as a responsible and efficient manager.

Ivan has also had an impact on the lives of others. From international friends that he has made at the University whom he still keeps in close touch with, to current international students who are benefited from his involvement in international activities, to the new students that he has recruited to become more involved in the Cosmopolitan Club.

As is evident, Ivan's kind personality, his involvement in the Cosmopolitan Club, and his commitment to international understanding make him a role model for international students, a responsible leader, and a great friend.
