Profile: Heejung Kim

Heejung Kim, a native of Seoul, Korea, is currently a graduate student in music. Heejung began her music study at the age of four, with the piano as her first instrument. In her teen years, she moved on to cello. This change of instrument happened because her mother had heard the Arpeggione Sonata by Schubert on the radio one day. Soon thereafter, Heejung's mother brought home a cello for her to learn. Thus, playing this instrument was not entirely her choice. Still, she grew to love the instrument and she says that her cello study has been very pleasant.

Heejung performed at the April 9, 2000, International Dinner and will perform later this semester at the Polish dinner. The International Dinner guests were very appreciative of her fine performance. About music and about her playing music, Heejung states, "I do firmly believe that music is a universal language. Playing cello for me is an ultimate way of expressing the human soul. I thank God for giving me the privilege of having musical talents. I am free of anxiety, worries, and suffering when I perform; I can be who I am without trying to impress anyone. But most importantly, I enjoy the moments when I can share something beautiful through music with others." Heejung admits that her music degree may not get her a high-paying job, by some standards, but she believes that being a musician is worth more than a fat salary!

The Cosmopolitan Club is fortunate to have such a talented musician and a wonderful person in its midst.
