Alumni News

by Mary A. Hussey

Greetings, Fellow Alumni,

From 307 East John Street, Champaign, the home of the Cosmopolites, past and present, at the U of I. Time flies, but one good product is that we can soon be rid of the chore of writing so many 9's!

We hope that the beginning of the new academic year on the U of I campus also may be a new, pleasant start on—whatever—in your life. We have already had some splendid Sunday evening dinners and Thursday evening coffee hours. All of this puts us in a bright, cheerful, hopeful mood. To add to this, the house is enjoying a rebuilt lawn mower, a new recycling bin and a box fan.

Since our last Newsletter (May 1999), we have received financial donations from the following alums: Gerry Kraft, Bennett Berman, Ray and Sid Epstein via the U of I Foundation; and support from the local community through Mary Kay Peer, National City Bank, Busey Bank, News-Gazette, Laura Hahn, Patricia Watts, and Jean Czaja.

Happily we have a full house; one resident tells me that her mother was a Cosmo member when she was a student here (see story on page 6).

As you may know, our Board President, Susan Taylor, retired from the University faculty at the end of 1998-9 academic year. Some of her friends at Cosmo and friends from the English Department have contributed to a fund to honor her retirement. If any of you out there would like to add to this, please feel free to do so. Make your check out to the Cosmopolitan Club, send it to Andrea Shields, Executive Director, 307 E. John St., Champaign, IL 61820, and mention that it is for the Susan Taylor Fund.

As previously mentioned, everyone is in good spirits, and so far everything is in working order. Believe me, this is no trivial blessing for a campus organized house!

So come out and see us. The Welcome mat is out.
