To My Cosmopolitan Friends

by Charles-Eric Winandy

How to describe my experience here in Cosmo? There is so much to say.

Since I’ve been here, there has not been a single day without thinking of how lucky I was to find this place to stay. I’ve discovered so many things here. New people, new cultures, new ways of life, new foods, and, most importantly, new friends. Not just friends for a party or a trip. Real friends. People you learn to know, to appreciate for who they are. People who make you discover their own culture, their thoughts, their lives. People with whom you can have a lot of fun (really a lot!), but with whom you can also talk. For hours, about all and everything.

As this world is getting more and more superficial, enjoying the simple fact of being close to such friends has become rare. I arrived here only three months ago, and I have the impression that I know these peoples since always. I will leave Cosmo in less than two months, but our friendships will last well beyond.

And what can be better than having fun with your friends? I have so much fun here. Going out in a nightclub to discover, again and again, the “local population” (and the local way of dancing ;-), in a bar to enjoy some American beers (yep!), in a restaurant to eat “as much as possible,” here in Cosmo for the coffee hours and the international dinners. Or just for a drink and a movie. Even going to the supermarket is fun!

I enjoy seeing Zhongning making a demo of his new salsa steps, Ajay counting the number of calories he is allowed to eat for dinner, the smile of Felix when he finally gets his beer at the end of the day, Igor ringing the bell half an hour later because he missed his bus again, Daniela speaking about her performance of the day in the swimming pool, or “simply cooking” 45 dishes for herself for the next two months. And our “post-2 am” discussions in the kitchen. And that’s just a few examples; I could write dozens of anecdotes like that.

Thanks to all my friends, I’ve changed. I will remember my time here forever. Living in Cosmo is really a wonderful experience.

Charles-Eric Winandy (Eric) is an exchange student from Belgium, loves to travel and has felt home at Cosmo from his first day here. Every Saturday he practices the local way of dancing but you need to ask him by yourself about the details.
