Nothing Comes Between Us and…

by Sheila Khalib

…FOOD!! One of the things that people would quickly learn about us, the Cosmopolitans, is that we live to eat. Coffee hours and international dinners only, are not enough to satisfy our fondness for food. When we go out (socializing), we eat. When we go shopping, we eat some more, or buy food. When we have nothing better to do, we sit in front of the TV and eat.

Do you know what the most tortuous moment is, living in the Cosmopolitan house? It is when someone cooks something that smells so good; the aroma creeps into every corner of the house, into your room, where you simply cannot escape, let alone resist, a trip to the kitchen to see what is cooking (and while you’re there, snip some of the food for yourself!).

A common daily conversation:

Food Hunter : Wow… that smells so good…

Easy Target : Thanks!

Food Hunter : What are you cooking?

Easy Target : Umm… Just something… there is no English word to describe it.

Food Hunter : Can I taste some when you’re done (cooking)?

Easy Target : Sure, but don’t blame me if it tastes like crap!

Food Hunter : Oh, I’m sure it’s going to be delicious.

Food Hunter : So… How long is it going to take until it’s done?

Easy Target: Hmm… I don’t know… 15 minutes to half an hour? or maybe an hour…

5 minutes later…

Food Hunter : Is it done yet?

3 minutes later…

Food Hunter : Is it done yet?

2 minutes later…

Another Food Hunter : Hey, I heard that you’re cooking. Let me know when you’re done!

Well, you get the idea!
