A Bench in Turkey

In Boðaziçi University Campus in Ýstanbul there is a stone bench on which our motto "above all nations is humanity" is engraved. Whether there is some connection between our club and this bench is still open to question. Any information about this would be appreciated.

After a picture of this bench was added to the Cosmopolitan Club Web site, we received the following note from Derek Chan, of AIESEC, a student exchange organization at the University of Illinois:

The person who originally coined the Cosmopolitan Club motto was Goldwin Smith, a prominent late 19th century history and English professor at Cornell University, who was famous for his liberal, internationalist, and democratic views. In fact, there is a building on the Cornell campus named after him and in front of it is a bench with the exact phrase engraved on it.

If anyone has any further information on the "bench in Turkey," please let us know.
